Review from week 1

I thought week one was very exciting, as several teams from our league pushed forward at various times to give the Rounders a challenge. Nonetheless, the Rounders managed to stay ahead and make the statement that SHREWSBURY is the team to beat.

Team of the Week (Rounders)
*The Rounders have arguably one of the best pitching rotations at the moment. Oswalt and Beckett will be their season aces, but Penny and Webb are having terrific starts and finally are showing the potential they’ve been branded with since their rookie seasons.
*Also, the bullpen pickups of Worrell and Rodney have given them early quick saves, and are nice complements to Lidge, and M. Gonzalez. In addition, Linebrink, Shields, and Duchscherer, and McCarthy will provide nice vulture wins as middle relievers.
*Don’t forget the hot-hitting performance of Chris Shelton… Could this be his breakout year??? Only time will tell… if the Tiger hitters stay hot, he’ll have a boatload of RBI opportunities.

M*A*S*H Unit (Baked Beans)
*You have to hand it to Paul. Despite all those injuries to his starting rotation, he’s got his Beans playing hard. The Baked Beans quietly inched up to #3 at one point during the week, until the hitting cooled off a little. When Sheets, Lowry, Prior, and Burnett join the rotation in the upcoming weeks, he will contend. Those guys are not only solid, they get a lot of K’s… and how about that Jon Papelbon? What a nice pickup.
*Baked Beans have solid hitting and nice speed. Having Reyes and Figgins alone will get you a 9 or 10 score for the stolen bases roto department. Besides, he has a top-3 catcher, a top-5 1st baseman, and a guy (Sexson) who can easily give you 35+ homeruns. The Beans only have 9 homers at the moment, but watch them EXPLODE.

QUIET ASSASSIN (Upstate NY K9’s)
*This team is QUIETLY moving up the ranks. Let’s see… he has possibly the 2nd best pitcher (Carpenter), possibly the best closer (Mo Rivera), the best catcher (Martinez), and the best power-hitting Outfielder (Manny Ramirez). It seemed that when Baez became a bonafide closer for the K9s, he gave an extra zap of energy to the K9s pitching staff.

Sleeping Giant (Crazy Carl)
*This team has all the right parts right now. Solid hitters up and down the lineup... just underachieving a little right now. But if Freel stays healthy and continue to play, he could steal 50 in 130 games.
*Schilling is coming back to form, Halladay will compete for Cy Young, Perez is getting a lot of K’s this year, and Verlander could join King Felix among the top young studs of the league. SHHHHHH...Don’t wake up the sleeping giant…
